J. B. HAGGIN'S VETERAN MANAGER IS DEAD.
New York. April 25. — John Mackey died early this
morning in a cottage he occupied at Sheepshead Bav.
which is one of ito- numerous buildings owned by
J. B. llaggim He speut yesterday in W. L. Powers’
ofltco aud told Frank Stevens lie vyas eighty years
old and had never felt belter. His daughter. Miss
Margaret Mackey, had spout the ’ winter here also.
Stic lias made frequent journeys to Europe with her
father in connection with sales of Hoggin horses.
Deceased had only recently returned from California
and was getting ready to assist in cataloging the
lHuggin yearlings which are to be sold in a few
weeks by tin* Powers Hunter Company.
Lexington. Ky., April 25.— John Mat-key. the vet
eran manager of thoroughbred horses and breeding
for James B. Hnggin, died suddenly in New York
litis morning. Details are not obtainable here.
Mackey was eighty years old and was one of the
conspicuous figures of the American turf. He was
an international character, having visited many
countries in buying and selling horses fur hi- million-
aire employer. Mackey, himself, was well-to-do.
lie has considerable property in Sacramento. Cal.,
where he spent the winter. He had four daughters
who survive him.
Intelligence of the unexpected taking away of
John Mackey will lie received with unfeigned re-
gret by many real friends scattered from the
Atlantic to the Pa el He. Mentally and bodily he wa-
tt big man and for the last twenty-five years or more
was in charge of the extensive breeding enterprises
carried on by J. It. Haggin. who entrusted tlie busi
ness to him completely, with implicit reliance in
his ability and integrity. In the palmy days of
thoroughbred brood iug at Rancho del Paso he was in
charge of the greatest band of stallions, broodmares
and their offspring ever possessed by one man or
gathered in the confines of one breeding farm. It
was said of liim that, such was his grasp of details,
lie knew. every one of them by sight at all times.
Unquestionably liis death will be a shocking blow to
his long-time intimate friend and employer.

Branch of the Remount Association on Wednesday.
This action was taken at a conference between repre-
sentatives of both organizations.
Those present wove Col. Robert M. Thompson
ol New York anil Washington; l’crry Belmont, Col.
Henry T. Allen of the Army; Frederick L. lliiule-
koper, military writer and student interested in
lmrse breeding; Colonel Holt and G. Arthur Bell, of
the Bureau of Animal Industry of the Department
of Agriculture, which is establishing national horse
breeding stations. The merged organization will
he known as the National Remount Association.
Maj. General Leonard Wood, chief of -tall, was
elected president. Lieut. -Gen. Samuel R. M. Young,
U. S. A., retired, who was president of the Wash-
ington Brunch of the Remount Assoeial inn. was
elected vice-president. Frederick L. IIiiideko|n*r.
secretary, in place of Algernon Daingertieid. and
twenty-six directors were named, fourteen of whom
were directors ot the old National Remount Assoein
tloii and twelve of whom were directors of tin*
Washington Branch Association.
Tlie new organization is to conduct a national
campaign for the development of a better type of
horses for tlie use of the cavalry of the army and
supply its needs for time of war.
The old National Association’s twelve directors
included August Belmont of New York, Spencer
Borden of Massachusetts. Walter G. Goodwill of
Connecticut. Col. James It. Castlcmau of Kentucky
and Henry Fairfax of Virginia. All of tlie old di
rectors were re-elected. The new directors elected
to serve in addition to the twelve old ones were:
Gen. 8. M. B. Young. Col. Henry T. Allen. Perry
Belmont. Frederick L. Hindekoper. Henry White,
J. It. Thomas of New York. Col. Robert M. Thomp-
son. Arthur Lee. Dr. Guy Whiting. Lieut. Col. F.
S. Foultz, G. Arthur Bell. Col. Alexander Rodgers
and William Corcoran East Is.
Originally it was the intention that the National
Remount Association should have branches all over
the country. The Washington branch, the only
one actually started, was active and did more work
than the parent Imdy. It seemed that it would lie
better not to have branch associations, and that
was why amalgamation was effected. The now
directors were all members of the Washington branch
and they will have a majority control of the board.
While General Wood was elected president, it is
understood that before December next he will re-
sign , from the presidency and that then General
Young will become president.
